Ascendant [Jul. 28th, 2006|05:45 pm]
[Tags|, ]

Title: Ascendant
Summary: Artemis learns to see beyond his nose.
Genre: General
Rating: G
Pairing: None
Warnings: None

Father’s shoes shine black. His trousers are traced with thin grey lines.

Mother’s skirts are long and silky and precious. She smooths them with open palms when I wrap my arms around her.

Juliet wants to play soldiers. Her hair is a halo, lit from above. But I don’t like soldiers.

Butler is a mountain above me, except when he sits on the carpet beside me. I wobble on his thigh to look into his eyes.

Mother yells when I climb on the table.

Juliet has eyes shaped like Butler’s. Mother’s lips are pink. Father hides my eyes above his nose.

Red Shift [Jul. 23rd, 2006|08:59 am]
[Tags|, ]

Title: Red Shift
Summary: The farther away something is, the faster it moves away.
Genre: Angst
Rating: PG
Pairing: None
Warning: None

In the blink of an eye—a blink lasting decades, a blink destroying me—those I’d not known well had forgotten me, and I them.  Only my closest friends and family remembered me.

Time passed, and Juliet, too, drifted slowly away across the vacuum.  She had a life to pursue: why linger on what was gone?

Even my parents eventually thought me lost, which perhaps I was.  But even something that cannot move or speak might be found.

Butler stayed close until his age took its toll.

Then the void that encompassed me grew until it was all there was.

Little Miss Goldilocks [Jul. 23rd, 2006|08:58 am]
[Tags|, ]

Title: Little Miss Goldilocks
Summary: Lili was always the epitome of innocence, of course.
Genre: General
Rating: G
Pairing: None
Warning: None

She laughs—naively, sweetly, cruelly—at the idea of troubles. Her innocence charms even the most gruff, grizzled warrior.

Doesn’t she realise that only she has the kisses of Fate and Fortune upon her forehead?

How fascinating it is to watch her:

gracefully intruding upon the keeping of someone’s heart
gently clawing the heart into pieces and trying them on for size
blushing prettily when she wakes up and realises what she’s done.

And most of all, to see the brilliance of her golden halo as she waltzes her way through the dangerous woods, in search of yet another cottage.

Lunar Fallacy [Jul. 23rd, 2006|08:57 am]
[Tags|, ]

Title: Lunar Fallacy
Summary: Sometimes fantasy is closer to reality than you might think…
Genre: Angst
Rating: G
Pairing: None

Warning: None

Artemis dreams in colour.

He chases multi-hued rainbowsthe physics of refraction bending before his geniusand leprechauns dance around him as he bathes in the bright gold he finds.

When he wakes, the pale light of the full moon leeches all but the shadows from around him.  In the attic, his mother is weeping, lost without his father beside her, and the Butlers converse in barely audible, worried tones.

An idea sparks in his mind… but, in the moon-bleak darkness, he instantly dismisses it, pressing his wet face into the pillow.

It had only been a dream, after all.

Title: [untitled]
Summary: Artemis, and a bad day.
Genre: Angst
Rating: PG
Pairing: None
Warning: Strong references to the Apocrypha and other controversial spiritual works—possibly offensive

It rained—

kssss went the drizzle, kssss like the slow hiss of the serpents, kssss like Patrick in Ireland, kssss like the Garden of Eden, kssss like the Tree of Knowledge, kssss like the end of innocence, kssss like the seal on mortality, kssss like Father Lucifer the man, kssss like Father Lucifer the sane, kssss like the golden fiddle, kssss like a throne in Gehenna, kssss like paradise offered, kssss like paradise lost, kssss like a divine comedy, kssss like a bad ragtime, kssss like a bad day.

Artemis smiled. He had always preferred the drizzle to the rain.

The requirement for this month was that each fic must be a 100 word drabble. The authors were also given the option of using this prompt:

“Excuse me,” I said. “Why do you do that?”
“Do what?”
“Only ask questions about three-letter words?”
“I don’t know—I just happen to like three-letter words today. There are a lot of big topics with only three letters—God, for example, and Art, and bugs.”
